Similarly, the airflow direction in the enclosed mechanism gives these laminar flow hoods their name. In theory, the flow originates from above, like the vertical laminar hoods, but it soon changes and travels across the functional surface from back to front. There are instances where the air intake is done from the side. Both approaches use the horizontal flow principle to protect the product and material.

The vertical laminar flow is directed by a vertical laminar flow system into a descending filter above the operating surface, which is situated atop the working chamber. In order to remove the particles, it shifts the flow via the front access region and highlights the effect of gravity. There are situations when the mass of emerging contaminants (ECs) or micro-pollutants is insufficient. The airflow helps to remove the great majority of the particles from the box, and some of them land on the surfaces of the enclosure that are readily cleaned.
A vertical laminar flow hood is designed similarly to a cleanroom, with the filtering element located on the upper side. The key advantage is that it doesn't require a lot of floor space, which is crucial for some labs.
